Meaning and history

Nereus is a name derived from Greek neros, meaning “water, fresh.” In Greek mythology, Nereus was a sea god and the father of the Nereids. The name appears briefly in the New Testament as that of a Christian in Rome, and it was also borne by a 1st-century Roman saint, a soldier who was martyred with his companion Achilleus for refusing to execute Christians.
