Meaning and history
Meaning unknown, possibly of Akkadian origin or from a Hebrew word meaning “rebel.” In the Old Testament, Nimrod is a renowned hunter and the great-grandson of Noah, credited as the founder of Babylon. Because of this biblical figure, the name entered English as a word meaning “hunter,” and in American English it later also came to mean “fool” after Daffy Duck used it for the clumsy hunter Elmer Fudd in a 1948 cartoon.
