Meaning and history
Nina developed in Russia and Italy as a short form of names ending in -nina, such as Antonina and Giannina, before spreading through Western Europe in the nineteenth century. Because it arose from several longer names, it does not have one universal meaning, and it is unrelated to the differently pronounced Spanish word niña. Famous bearers include jazz singer and pianist Nina Simone and actress Nina Dobrev.
