Meaning and history
Nona has several independent associations. In ancient Rome, Nona was the goddess connected with pregnancy and childbirth and one of the Parcae, the Roman Fates; her name relates to Latin nonus, “ninth.” Nona is also used in Georgia as a feminine given name, with a separate and uncertain origin, and can occur as an affectionate form in other languages. Notable bearers include Georgian chess grandmaster Nona Gaprindashvili, the first woman awarded the FIDE grandmaster title, and American singer Nona Hendryx.
