Norm is an English masculine short form of Norman. Norman began as a Germanic ethnic byname meaning “northman,” referring especially to Scandinavians and later the Normans of medieval France. The Norman Conquest gave the name substantial English historical associations. Norm is often used independently in North America. Notable bearers include Canadian comedian Norm Macdonald and American basketball player and coach Norm Van Lier.
