Meaning and history
Created by Felice Romani for the title character, a Gaulish priestess, in the opera Norma (1831), the name may derive from Latin norma, meaning “rule.” It is also commonly used as a feminine form of Norman.
Norma moved from #859 to #928 for girls between 2001 and 2002. Its highest annual birth count came in 1931, with 8,759 births.
