Nubia is a modern feminine name taken from the historical region of Nubia along the Nile in present-day southern Egypt and northern Sudan. The region was home to ancient kingdoms including Kush, Nobatia, Makuria, and Alodia. The ultimate origin of the geographical name is uncertain; a popular connection with the ancient Egyptian word for gold is debated and should not be treated as settled etymology. Notable bearers include Brazilian actor and director Núbia Lafayette and Cuban-American actor Nubia Martí, whose spelling preserves the name’s Spanish form.
