Meaning and history
Meaning unknown, probably of non-Greek origin, though it is traditionally linked to Greek ὀδύσσομαι (odyssomai), meaning “to hate.” In Greek legend, Odysseus was one of the heroes of the Trojan War and was famed as a cunning strategist, credited with devising the Trojan Horse. Homer’s Odyssey tells of his misadventures on the journey home to his kingdom and his wife Penelope.
