Meaning and history
Perhaps related to Greek ὄρφνη (orphne), meaning “the darkness of night.” In Greek mythology, Orpheus was a poet and musician who descended to the underworld to recover his wife Eurydice after her death. He charmed Hades with his lyre and was permitted to lead her back to the surface on the condition that he not look at her until they had emerged, but at the last moment he looked back, and she was drawn again into Hades.
