Osbert is derived from the Old English elements os, meaning “god,” and beorht, meaning “bright.” After the Norman Conquest, the Old English form merged with its Norman cognate. The name was rare in the Middle Ages, eventually fell out of use, and was briefly revived in the 19th century.
