Meaning and history
Osgar is an Irish and Scottish Gaelic form related to Oscar. It is traditionally analyzed from Gaelic os, “deer,” and cara, “friend,” producing “friend of deer,” though the early name’s development is not entirely certain. In the Fenian Cycle, Oisín’s son Oscar is a celebrated young warrior of the Fianna. A notable modern bearer is Irish tennis player Osgar O’Hoisin. Oscar became the more widespread international spelling through literature and royal use.
