Meaning and history
Osiris is the Greek form of the Egyptian wsjr, reconstructed as Asar, Usir, and other variants, whose meaning is uncertain but may be related to wsr “mighty” or jrt “eye.” In Egyptian mythology, he was the god of fertility, agriculture, and the dead and served as judge of the underworld. One story says that his brother Seth killed him, after which his wife Isis restored him to life in order to conceive their son Horus, who later avenged his father.
