Osman is the Turkish and Bosnian form of the Arabic name Uthman. Its ancient Arabic meaning is uncertain, though it is traditionally associated with a type of young bustard bird. Uthman ibn Affan, the third caliph of Islam, gave the name major religious importance. Osman I, founder of the Ottoman dynasty, gave it enduring Turkish historical significance; “Ottoman” derives from a European form of his name. Notable modern bearers include Turkish footballer Osman Bukari.
