Meaning and history
Osmond comes from the Old English elements os, meaning “god,” and mund, meaning “protection.” In Anglo-Saxon England, the related Norse form Ásmundr was also used, and another variant was later brought in by the Normans. The name was borne by Saint Osmund, an 11th-century Norman nobleman who became an English bishop. Although it later became rare, it was revived in the 19th century partly through a surname derived from the given name.
