Meaning and history
Padma means “lotus” in Sanskrit and transcribes both the feminine form पद्मा, with a long final vowel, and the masculine form पद्म, with a short final vowel. In some Hindu traditions, a lotus bearing the god Brahma is said to have emerged from the navel of Vishnu, and the name appears in Hindu texts for several figures, including the goddess Lakshmi and the hero Rama.
