Pearlie is an English feminine diminutive of Pearl. Pearl comes from the English word for the lustrous gem formed inside certain molluscs, ultimately through Old French and Latin. Pearls have symbolized purity, rarity, and value in many cultures and appear in biblical imagery, including the “pearl of great price.” Pearlie became an independent name in the nineteenth century. Notable bearers include American civil-rights activist Pearlie Reed and educator Pearlie Posey.
