Perceval is an Old French form of Percival, the Arthurian knight introduced prominently in Chrétien de Troyes’s unfinished romance Perceval, the Story of the Grail. The name’s origin is uncertain; the popular analysis “pierce the valley” is medieval or later wordplay rather than a secure etymology. Perceval’s innocence, spiritual education, and encounter with the Grail shaped later European literature. A notable real-life bearer was British writer and journalist Perceval Landon.
