From an English surname, originally a place name meaning “Pæga’s town,” Peyton was a rare masculine given name until the 1990s. Its use for a female character in the 1992 film The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, despite the character being a villain, helped the name gain popularity for both girls and boys. Notable bearers include Peyton Randolph (1721–1775), the first president of the Continental Congress, and American football quarterback Peyton Manning (1976–).
