Meaning and history

Philander comes from the Greek name Φίλανδρος (Philandros), meaning “friend of man,” from φίλος (philos) “friend” and ἀνήρ (aner), genitive ἀνδρός, “man.” It was the name of a son of Apollo and the nymph Acalle, and in the 18th century it was also coined as a word meaning “to womanize,” after which the name fell out of use.
