Philipp is the German form of Philip. Philip derives from Greek Philippos, combining philos, “friend” or “lover,” with hippos, “horse,” and means “lover of horses.” Kings of Macedon, including Philip II, father of Alexander the Great, gave it classical prominence, while Saint Philip the Apostle added Christian significance. Notable bearers include German footballer Philipp Lahm and German physicist and Nobel laureate Philipp Lenard. The doubled final p is standard German spelling.
