Meaning and history
Philomela is an ancient Greek feminine name commonly interpreted from philos, “loving,” and melos, “song,” as “lover of song,” though the myth may have influenced that interpretation. In Greek mythology, Philomela is assaulted and silenced by Tereus but exposes his crime through weaving; later tradition transforms her into a nightingale. Her story became a powerful literary symbol of violence, voicelessness, artistic testimony, and survival. Real-life modern bearers are rare.
