From Greek Φιλουμένη (Philoumene), meaning “to be loved,” an inflection of φιλέω (phileo), “to love,” this name belonged to an obscure early saint and martyr. It became widely known in 1802 after a tomb in Rome, apparently marked Filumena and thought to belong to another martyr named Philomena, was discovered; the inscription may actually have represented the Greek word φιλουμένη rather than a personal name.
