Piero is the Italian form of Peter. Peter comes from Greek Petros, meaning “stone” or “rock,” a translation of the Aramaic nickname Cephas given to the apostle Simon. Saint Peter’s leading role among Jesus’s disciples and traditional status as the first bishop of Rome gave the name immense Christian importance. Notable bearers include Renaissance painter Piero della Francesca and Italian artist Piero Manzoni. Pietro is another standard Italian form.
