Pippin is a medieval Germanic name of uncertain meaning, borne by several Frankish rulers. The best known were Pippin the Short, father of Charlemagne, and his ancestor Pippin of Herstal. In modern English it is also associated with the apple variety and with Peregrin “Pippin” Took in J. R. R. Tolkien’s fiction.
