Pius is a Late Roman masculine name from Latin pius, meaning “dutiful,” “devout,” or “pious,” especially in fulfilling obligations to gods, family, and country. It became strongly associated with the Roman Catholic Church through twelve popes named Pius, including Pius IX, whose pontificate was the longest after Saint Peter’s traditional tenure. Several saints also bore it. Notable modern bearers include Austrian artist Pius Strobl and Swiss footballer Pius Dorn.
