Meaning and history
Pluto is the Latin form of the Greek name Plouton, derived from a word meaning "wealth." It was an epithet of Hades, god of the underworld, reflecting the mineral riches beneath the earth. The dwarf planet Pluto was named for the deity in 1930, and Disney's dog character appeared under the same name soon afterward.
In 2025, 11 babies were recorded with the name Pluto, ranking #7,194 among boys.
