The name means “little playful one” in Powhatan, an Algonquian language, and was the nickname of a 17th-century Powhatan woman who was the daughter of the powerful chief Wahunsenacawh. She married the white colonist John Rolfe and traveled with him to England, where she died of illness before she could return.
