Pompey

Pompey is the English form of the Roman family name Pompeius, whose deeper etymology is uncertain. Its most famous bearer was Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus, known as Pompey the Great, a Roman general and political rival of Julius Caesar. In later English-speaking history, Pompey was also imposed on or given to some enslaved men of African descent, a context important to the name’s record. Modern independent use is rare, and confident literal meanings are not established.
