Meaning and history
Pontius is an ancient Roman family name of uncertain origin, possibly connected with the Oscan language of southern Italy. It is best known from Pontius Pilate, the Roman prefect of Judaea who presided over the trial of Jesus in the New Testament accounts, giving the name a strong Christian association. It was also borne by early saints, including Pontius of Cimiez. Modern use as a given name is rare, and reliable contemporary bearers are limited.
