Meaning and history
Portia is a variant of Porcia, the feminine form of the Roman family name Porcius, and was used by William Shakespeare for the heroine of The Merchant of Venice (1596), where she disguises herself as a man to defend Antonio in court. It is also the name of a moon of Uranus, named after the Shakespearean character.
Portia moved from #843 to #964 for girls between 1990 and 1991. Its highest annual birth count came in 1989, with 259 births.
