Meaning and history

Psyche means “the soul” and comes from Greek ψύχω (psycho), “to breathe,” reflecting the Greek belief that breath was the soul. In Greek mythology, Psyche was a beautiful maiden loved by Eros, or Cupid in Roman mythology, and she is the subject of Keats’s Ode to Psyche (1819).
