Ptolemy comes from the Greek name Πτολεμαῖος (Ptolemaios), derived from πολεμήϊος (polemeios), meaning “aggressive” or “warlike.” It was the name borne by several Greco-Egyptian rulers of Egypt, all descendants of Ptolemy I Soter, one of Alexander the Great’s generals, and also by a 2nd-century Greek astronomer.
