Meaning and history
Publius is an ancient Roman masculine praenomen, probably derived from Latin populus, meaning “people,” though the exact historical formation is uncertain. It was one of the standard personal names used by Roman citizens. Famous bearers include poet Publius Vergilius Maro, known as Virgil, and general Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus, victor over Hannibal. The name therefore carries strong associations with Roman literature, government, and military history. Modern use is rare.
