Rapunzel is primarily a German literary name from the fairy tale recorded by the Brothers Grimm. The heroine is named after rapunzel, a German plant word usually referring to rampion or a related edible salad green craved by her mother during pregnancy. The Grimms adapted earlier European versions, including Charlotte-Rose de Caumont de La Force’s Persinette.
