Meaning and history
Rayner comes from the Germanic name Raginheri, formed from regin, meaning “advice, counsel, decision,” and heri, meaning “army.” It was associated with Saint Rainerius, a 12th-century hermit from Pisa, and was brought to England by the Normans, where it became generally used but was already rare by the end of the Middle Ages.
