Renard is a French masculine name and surname derived from the Germanic name Raginhard, combining ragin, “counsel” or “decision,” with hard, “brave” or “hardy.” The medieval beast epic about Reynard the Fox made the character so famous that renard eventually replaced the older French word for “fox.” As a result, the name carries both Germanic personal-name history and a later fox association. A notable bearer is American former baseball player Renard Robinson.
