Reuel is a biblical masculine name from Hebrew Reuel, meaning “friend of God.” In the Hebrew Bible, the name is borne by several figures, including a priest of Midian associated with Moses’s family; traditions differ over his relationship to Jethro. The name later entered English Christian use through biblical reading. A notable bearer was writer J. R. R. Tolkien, whose full name was John Ronald Reuel Tolkien and who passed Reuel to several descendants.
