Meaning and history
Reynard comes from the Germanic name Raginhard, formed from regin, meaning “advice, counsel, decision,” and hart, meaning “hard, firm, brave, hardy.” The Normans introduced it to England as Reinard, but it never became very common there. The name was later borne by Reynard the Fox, the sly hero of medieval fables, and as a result renard became the French word for “fox.”
