This name comes from the Germanic name Raginald, formed from regin “advice, counsel, decision” and walt “power, authority.” The Normans, who used forms such as Reinald and Reinold, brought it to Britain, where it reinforced rare Old English and Norse cognates already in use. It was common in the Middle Ages but became rarer after the 15th century.
