Roger derives from Germanic elements hrod, “fame,” and gar, “spear,” giving the traditional meaning “famous spear.” The name was reinforced in Britain by Norman French use and later became a common surname as well. Notable given-name bearers include American actor and voice artist Rodger Bumpass and American football player Rodger Saffold. Roger remains the more common modern spelling.
