Meaning and history
Roger comes from Germanic Hrodger, meaning "famous spear." The Normans brought it to England, replacing Old English Hroðgar of Beowulf; common in the Middle Ages, it declined by the 18th century before reviving. Norman rulers Roger I and Roger II bore it, and it was highly popular in early-20th-century France and especially from the 1930s through the next two decades in English-speaking countries. Notable bearers include actor Roger Moore (1927–2017) and tennis player Roger Federer (1981–).
