Meaning and history
Roma has several possible origins. It may refer directly to Rome, whose ancient name Roma has an uncertain etymology, or serve as a short form of names such as Romana or Romilda. In South Asia it can arise independently, and meanings depend on the source language and spelling. It should not automatically be linked with the Romani people, whose ethnonym has a different history. Notable bearers include Northern Irish actor Roma Downey and American actor Roma Maffia.
Roma moved from #855 to #990 for girls between 1946 and 1947. Its highest annual birth count came in 1930, with 174 births.
