Meaning and history
Rona has several origins. In Scottish use it may come from the Hebridean island Rona, whose Old Norse name is generally interpreted as “rough island.” In Hebrew, Rona is a feminine form related to ron, “song” or “joy.” It can also shorten names such as Veronica in English. These traditions are unrelated and should remain distinct. Notable bearers include Canadian politician Rona Ambrose and Scottish actor Rona Anderson.
