Meaning and history
Rosaleen is an Irish and English form influenced by Rose and by Irish Róisín, a diminutive meaning “little rose.” In Irish cultural history, “Dark Rosaleen” was an English rendering of Róisín Dubh, a poetic personification of Ireland, notably used by poet James Clarence Mangan. This gives the name both floral and nationalist literary associations. Notable bearers include Australian artist and occultist Rosaleen Norton and Irish actor Rosaleen Linehan. The origins of Rose itself are Germanic and Latin-influenced.
