Anglicized form of the Irish name Ruadhán. As an English name, Rowan may also come from the surname Rowan, which itself derives from the Irish given name, or from the rowan tree, a word of Old Norse origin that coincidentally shares the same Indo-European root meaning “red” with the Irish name.
