Ruby comes from the name of the red gemstone, ultimately from Latin ruber, “red.” The gem has been valued since antiquity and traditionally symbolizes passion, vitality, and protection. Ruby entered regular English given-name use in the nineteenth century alongside other jewel names. The final e in Rubye does not change its origin. Notable bearers include American educator Rubye Hibler Hall and civil-rights activist Rubye Bridges.
