Meaning and history
German variant of Robert, derived from the Old German form Hrodperht. It was borne by Saint Rupert of Salzburg in the 7th century and Saint Rupert of Bingen in the 8th century, and was introduced to England in the 17th century by Prince Rupert of the Rhine, the military commander and nephew of Charles I. A notable modern bearer is the Australian-American businessman Rupert Murdoch (1931–).
