Sanjaya is a Sanskrit masculine name meaning “victorious,” “triumphant,” or “completely conquering,” from a root meaning “to conquer.” In the Mahabharata, Sanjaya is the charioteer and adviser of King Dhritarashtra who receives divine sight and narrates the events of the battlefield, including the Bhagavad Gita. The name remains in use across South and Southeast Asia. Notable bearers include Indian policy adviser and writer Sanjaya Baru and American singer Sanjaya Malakar.
