Meaning and history
Saúl comes from the Hebrew name שָׁאוּל (Shaʾul), meaning “asked for” or “prayed for.” It was the name of Israel’s first king in the Old Testament; before the end of his reign, he lost God’s favour and, after a defeat by the Philistines, was succeeded by David. In the New Testament, Saul was the original Hebrew name of the apostle Paul.
