Saverio is the Italian form of Xavier. Xavier originated as a Basque place name, Etxeberria or Xabier, meaning “new house.” The given name spread through Saint Francis Xavier, the sixteenth-century Jesuit missionary and co-founder of the Society of Jesus, whose birthplace was Xavier Castle in Navarre. Saverio therefore has strong Catholic associations in Italy. Notable bearers include Italian film director Saverio Costanzo and mathematician Saverio Muratori.
